Have you ever gone into a home or any other space and wondered what was wrong with the look and feel of the room? Chances are it could be the lighting.
Lighting is an important component to any design but it is often overlooked. Lighting fixtures that are sized or hung incorrectly can really make or break the total design of any space.
Did you know that there are mathemetical formulas for hanging chandeliers and other lighting fixtures?
Here are some tips to make this less complicated.

What size chandelier to buy for over a table?
If you already have a table in your dining room or eat in kitchen and want to hang a chandelier over the table, it is important to size the diameter of the chandelier to the table instead of the room.
To calculate the width, start with the width of your table and subtract 12 inches. For example, if the table is 42 inches wide, the width of the chandelier should not be more than 30 inches.Take the width of your table and subtract 12 inches from it. This is a great size for your chandelier.
Another example of this would be if you have a table that is 60 inches round, subtract 12 and your chandelier should be 48 inches in diameter.

“lighting is the magical ingredient that makes or breaks a space; it’s one of the most important elements in all my designs.”
Tips for when selecting a chandelier for a new home where furniture has not been brought into your home yet, or in an open area where there will be traffic below the light fixture
Here's what you do. Add the length and width measurement of the room together. Your answer equals the right size diameter for the chandelier. Instead of feet, convert that number to inches and you will have the perfect size for your chandelier.
An example of this is, if you have a room that measures 14’ x 10’, all you need to do is add the length plus the width. 14’ + 10’ = 24’. Change the answer, 24 feet, to inches and you have the best diameter for your new chandelier. The chandelier should be 24 inches.
How high should I hang my chandelier?
The bottom of the chandelier should hang 7 feet and no less from the floor especially if you are walking under it. If you have tall individuals in your home, this measurement may need to go a bit higher.

Both blog articles are easy and comprehensive to follow. They have pictures to follow and help you understand.
The other resource I think is good is from Hubble.com. They have other lighting types with measurements that are comprehensive and easy to follow.
