Some gardens are designed. Mine was given to me, one Mother's Day at a time, by a little girl with red hair and muddy hands who grew into one of the most remarkable women I know. Every spring, when the peonies open and the lilacs fill the air, I think of her — not as she is now but as she was then, eyes sparkling with a secret she could barely keep.
