A Parisian Pause in the Litchfield Hills | One Afternoon at Le Gamin in Sharon, Connecticut

Le Gamin was a restaurant we had wanted to try for quite some time, and on a cold, early November afternoon, we finally did. The drive north was calm and beautiful, the kind of New England scenery that feels untouched by hurry. The hills rose and fell softly, barns stood quiet in open fields, and the sky hung low with the faint light of winter.

A Café in the Heart of Sharon

In the center of town, a small café came into view. Its sign read Le Gamin, a name that instantly made me think of Paris. Inside, the space felt warm and familiar. The waitstaff greeted us kindly and led us to two blue and white café chairs near the window. Walking inside, I was struck by how casual it was and was utterly enchanted by the scent of coffee, rich and comforting.

I ordered a café au lait with oat milk before even opening the menu. It arrived first, served in a traditional, large French bowl, the kind you find throughout France. The flavor was deliciously smooth and balanced, and the generous serving immediately brought me back to mornings in Paris when life felt beautifully unhurried.

Simple Dishes, French Spirit

We began our meal with the soupe à l’oignon, served in one of those same classic bowls. The cheese topping was light, not overwhelming, and the broth was mellow yet full of flavor. The onions were nicely caramelized, giving the soup a quiet depth that felt both familiar and comforting.

Next came the galette au sarrasin, a traditional buckwheat crêpe folded beside a small salad of mixed greens. The flavor was rustic and authentic, just as I’ve tasted in cafés in France. The edges were crisp, the center tender, and the greens were simply dressed, allowing the buckwheat to take center stage.

My husband ordered the tarte flambée, a paper-thin crust layered with farmer’s cheese, caramelized onions, and local uncured bacon. Each bite was balanced and satisfying. Another version paired brie, apples, and onions confit, which we promised to try on our next visit.

A Café with a History

As we were finishing, the owner passed by our table and exchanged a few friendly words with us. His manner was kind and unassuming, much like the café itself.

Le Gamin has a story that adds to its charm. Its founder, Robert Arbor, was born in Fontainebleau, France, and opened the first Le Gamin in Soho, New York, in the early 1990s. His dream was to create a neighborhood café that captured the ease and sincerity of French dining. Years later, the Sharon location brought that same feeling to Connecticut’s countryside, where time slows naturally and every detail feels intentional.

It was too cold that day to sit outside, though I could imagine how lovely it must be in summer when the terrace opens under the trees. The drive home wound past meadows and stone walls, a landscape that felt both familiar and timeless.

Where France Meets New England

Le Gamin bridged two worlds, the calm of New England and the effortless charm of France. The food was genuine and straightforward, the kind that speaks quietly of care. As I tasted the galette, I thought about how flavor can carry memory.

Heritage lives quietly in the food that still feels like home.

My family’s roots trace back to France in the 1600s, and though centuries have passed, the same buckwheat crêpes, known as ployes, were still served in my home. I was eager to try them again, as I hadn’t tasted anything like them since my travels to France a few years ago. The galette that afternoon brought it all back, the familiar flavor, the comfort, the quiet joy of something known. It reminded me of home, where my mother spent so much time in the kitchen making her buckwheat crêpes, and it reminded me of France, a place that has always felt like my second home. In that moment, the two worlds seemed to meet, connected by something as simple and beautiful as food.

Food has a way of traveling through time, connecting what was to what still is. The meal at Le Gamin felt like that, a meeting place between memory and the present, where flavor becomes its own kind of homecoming.

May your home be a place where friends meet, family gathers, and love grows.
