Composing Rituals in Provence: Craft, Concentration, and the Art of Intentional Care

Some places stay with you in a way that is difficult to explain. Not simply as memory, but as something you carry. Provence has always been that for me.

My ancestors came to the Americas in the late 1600s, yet the French customs remained. They were carried forward in quiet ways, in how we gathered, how we approached food and ritual, and in the sensibility that shaped our home. Over time, those traditions became part of how I understood the world.

I have traveled to France many times, but what I did not expect was the depth of feeling that came with it. There was a sense of belonging that felt immediate and familiar, as though something had been waiting to be recognized. Provence, in particular, held that feeling.

It was from that place that I first came across L’AUGUSTE. What drew me in was not a product, but the artwork. There was something in it that felt known to me, a softness and depth that reflected the region itself. At the time, I was working on a project that needed a few illustrations. I reached out, not knowing where it might lead, and commissioned three pieces.

Through that process, I came to know Stéphanie. From the very beginning, she brought a level of care and professionalism that stayed with me. Our collaboration was thoughtful and seamless, and it opened the door to something more. I found myself wanting to understand the house more fully, not only the artwork, but the products, the materials, and the philosophy behind them.

I began carrying a small selection, starting with their lavender soaps and sachets. The experience felt immediate and familiar, as though I had stepped back into Provence. The scent lingered softly, the textures felt considered, and each piece carried a sense of place.

Over time, that introduction became a relationship, one built on shared values, a respect for craft, and a continued commitment to creating with intention.

Reaching out to L’AUGUSTE was not simply a professional decision. It felt deeply meaningful to me.

What follows offers a closer look at the house through Stéphanie’s perspective, where art, formulation, and ritual come together in a way that feels both considered and deeply rooted in place.

At L’AUGUSTE, skincare was never conceived as a routine to follow, but as a ritual to inhabit — an invitation to slow down, to observe, and to engage with care intentionally.

L’AUGUSTE did not begin as a conventional skincare house, but took shape in Provence through an intimate language of well-being, beauty, and care. Born from the friendship between Stephanie and Laure, L’AUGUSTE was rooted in a sensory and artistic language — one that sought to comfort, evoke, and bring beauty into everyday life. It first took form through organic lavender sachets, accompanied by Laure’s watercolor illustrations.

It was from this foundation that L’AUGUSTE gradually expanded into skincare. Drawing on Stephanie’s expertise and her longstanding commitment to holistic well-being, a new dimension emerged: concentrated formulations that were not a departure from the original vision, but its natural continuation.

Today, L’AUGUSTE is not a skincare brand in the conventional sense — it is a ritual house, where formulation, art, and sensory experience are held within a single philosophy of intentional care.

Ritual, Place, and the Rhythm of Provence

L’AUGUSTE was born in Provence, and Provence is more than a setting.

Here, care is shaped by dappled light crossing old stone walls, by the dry scent of wild herbs warmed by the sun, by the stillness of early mornings, by the mineral quiet of a place where time moves differently. Provence is not a backdrop; it is a way of understanding how beauty lives in the everyday.

At L’AUGUSTE, ritual is not a luxury layered on top of life. It is a way of returning attention to the gestures that sustain us. Applying a cleanser, inhaling a natural fragrance, warming an oil between the hands — these are small acts, but they shape the quality of a day.

A routine repeats.

A ritual transforms.

A routine asks for execution. A ritual asks for presence.

It invites us not simply to do, but to feel.

Concentration Over Dilution: The Philosophy of Waterless Botanical Formulation

At L’AUGUSTE, waterless formulation is both a technical and a philosophical choice. It reflects a desire for concentration, precision, and restraint. Rather than building formulas around dilution, we compose with what is essential: botanical oils, clays, and aromatic materials selected for their role and their relationship to the skin.

In a world that favors multiplication — more steps, more layers, more claims — we choose fewer formulas, composed with greater clarity. Waterless skincare allows us to work with density and intention. It asks more of the formulator, and demands honesty: every ingredient must matter and earn its place.

This choice is not about excess potency or aesthetic novelty. It is about respect. We do not formulate to overwhelm the skin or force it into submission. We formulate to accompany it — to support its natural balance without unnecessary dilution or interference.

Skincare that Evolves on Contact with the Skin

A defining quality of L’AUGUSTE is that our textures are not static. They are composed to evolve on contact with the skin, with water, and with the gesture itself.

This is one of the deepest expressions of our philosophy. Care should not rest on the surface of the skin; it should enter into dialogue with it.

VELVET, one of our earliest formulations and recently recognised with a Beauty Editor’s Choice Award at the Beauty Shortlist Awards, embodies this philosophy with particular clarity: a waterless cleansing balm that transforms upon contact with water into a delicate, sensorial milk, cleansing thoroughly while preserving the skin’s softness and comfort.

What interests us is not only efficacy, but the sensory intelligence of a formula — the way it responds, adapts, and unfolds through use. When a texture changes in the hands, on the skin, the gesture changes too. The person slows down. She notices. The act becomes less mechanical and more tactile, less prescribed and more lived.

In this way, skincare becomes immersive. It engages not only the skin but also the senses, and, with them, a subtler form of attention.

Craftsmanship and In-House Botanical Composition

Every L’AUGUSTE formula is developed and crafted in our laboratory in Provence. This is not simply a production choice; it is central to our understanding of authorship and responsibility.

Formulating and crafting in-house means remaining close to the material at every stage. It means working directly with oils, clays, and aromatic extracts until their balance feels exact. It means adjusting with patience, observing closely, and accepting that precision often comes quietly.

There is something in this process that mirrors the Provençal landscape: a kind of measured patience, an attention to what reveals itself slowly. Composition, for us, is not the assembly of ingredients into a trend-driven formula. It is a craft discipline — one that requires intuition, but also rigor: the ability to refine until the formula carries both integrity and life.

This is especially true when working without water, and when seeking textures that evolve naturally on the skin. Such formulas cannot be rushed. They must be composed with sensitivity to material, rhythm, and touch.

Where Art Meets Formulation

At L’AUGUSTE, art is not an aesthetic addition. It has been part of the house’s DNA from the very beginning.

From the beginning,

L’AUGUSTE was shaped through a dialogue between care and image, matter and emotion, ritual and visual language. Laure’s illustrations do not decorate; they belong to the inner composition.

Art, for us, is a way of making care travel further. A care piece is first discovered in its textile pouch, touched through fabric, received through image and memory. Then comes the ritual card, illustrated with the same attention, offering not a command but a gentle orientation — an invitation to reverie, emotion, and a more intimate form of presence. What follows is fragrance, texture, and gesture.

Even our lavender soap, Fleur de lavande — delicately wrapped in illustrated fabric and presented in carefully matching boxes — participates in this same sensory language. Its creamy texture, the lavender lingering softly in the air, the rounded shape resting in the palm: all of these elements extend the ritual beyond simple use, turning an everyday gesture into a rarer, more memorable experience — one to be felt, not merely performed.

In this sense, art and formulation are not separate disciplines within our house. Both are concerned with composition, balance, and feeling. Both seek to create presence.

The Ritual Experience: Skincare as a Gesture, Not a Correction

At L’AUGUSTE, skincare is not approached as correction or control.

We do not treat the skin as a problem to be fixed, disciplined, or endlessly optimized. Care begins from a different premise: that the skin deserves respect — and so does the person caring for it.

A ritual unfolds gradually. There is the pouch, the image, the card. Then fragrance emerges — an aromatic composition of pure, organic essential oils, blended not only for the skin, but for the emotional resonance they carry through scent, even before the formula is applied. Then the texture awakens. Finally, there is touch — the moment when the formula becomes yours.

There is no single correct gesture. What matters is not perfection, but presence.

Some days, care is brief. Other days, it expands. A ritual may take only a moment, or become a more spacious pause. The formula remains the same; what changes are the person, the mood, the time available, and the need of the day. In this way, L’AUGUSTE rituals are not prescriptive routines. They are open invitations.

This is also why we do not approach the skin through rigid categories or overly prescriptive systems. Our formulations are designed to accompany the skin rather than to constrain it. Rich in botanical oils yet carefully balanced, they are created to support comfort, suppleness, and breathability without overwhelming the skin or sealing it into a fixed identity. Care, in this sense, becomes adaptive: it listens, responds, and evolves with the person using it.

Within this philosophy, daily skincare becomes a small but meaningful practice of reconnection — a return to texture, to fragrance, to the body, to the present.

We continue to compose a small number of concentrated care pieces, each created to serve multiple purposes and always guided by the same principles: precision, sensoriality, and respect.

Because ultimately, care is not about correction.

It is about learning to pay attention.

It is about being present.

It is about returning, again and again, to what matters.

A Closing Reflection

What stays with me most is the way this house has been shaped by women, coming together with intention rather than urgency. Each brings her own perspective, yet nothing feels forced. It is held in balance, with care.

There is a depth that comes from that kind of collaboration. You can feel it in the work. It carries something steady and lasting.

That, more than anything, is what makes L’AUGUSTE so distinct, and why it feels so meaningful to share it here.
