Have you ever had a time in your life when a simple happened upon occurrence left you completely spellbound? You know, those moments when you walk into a group of events that collide and instantly alter your senses, leaving you with vivid memories that remain in your heart forever?
When visiting the beautiful Amalfi Coast of the Mediterranean, we were lucky enough to find ourselves in a place where time stopped and memories were made just in a fleeting moment.
Villa Cimbrone is a historic building in Ravello, on the Amalfi coast of southern Italy. Dating from at least the 11th century AD, it is famous for its scenic belvedere, the Terrace of Infinity.
After spending time vacationing in Tuscany and then Florence, my family decided to drive to the beautiful town of Ravello, located above the Amalfi Coast in Salerno, Campania, Southern Italy. It was a long drive from Florence, stopping at Pompeii and Naples and then driving along the torturous roads overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
When we finally got to the Hotel Villa Cimbrone late in the evening, the staff warmly greeted us and showed us our room. Although tired, we were all very excited to see the landscape that surrounded us and immediately opened our windows to take in the beautiful scenery of the Mediterranean. Looming more than 1200 ft (~365 meters) above the Mediterranean, the downward view was magnificent. We were on the top floor, making it feel even more surreal and vast.
The air smelled of sweet lemons and flowers. It was a kaleidoscope of aromas and sounds that seduced the senses and transported you to a place of complete enchantment.

““The most beautiful sight that I have ever seen in the world is the panoramic view from Villa Cimbrone on a bright winter’s day, when the sky and the sea are so vividly blue that it is not possible to distinguish them from each other.”

What came next was the most memorable of all. A small intimate party was on the villa’s terrace below our window. We couldn’t see the party but could hear them enjoying the beautiful evening. A woman started singing the operatic aria by Puccini, “O Mio babbino caro,” to our delight.
Her lovely voice engulfed the fullness and depth of the open air as she sang in Italian. It filled the whole Mediterranean with a warm echo of a song. The open-air allowed for astonishing acoustics, and it felt like a warm enchanting lullaby engulfed our entire surroundings. It was just an astounding performance that only could come from a person of extreme innate talent. We were mesmerized and so thankful to have happened at this moment. We sat and listened as our hearts filled with thanks for having been given this particular moment in time. It was utterly enchanting.
Being on the Mediterranean, smelling the sweet salt air of the vast sea, and listening to a beautiful concert while viewing the evening coastline riddled with twinkling lights from homes below was just one of the most surreal and moving experiences I’ve ever had. Maybe it was because my daughter sings classical music or I was already in love with Italy that made it so special, but it completely engulfed me.
We left feeling refreshed and inspired. We made new friends, and we learned so much about different cultures. But most importantly, we experienced the magic of the Amalfi Coast.
It was a place where time stopped, and memories were made just in a fleeting moment. We will never forget our time on the Amalfi Coast. It was a place where we felt truly alive, and we know we will always cherish the memories we made there.
The Hotel Villa Cimbrone is a fantastic destination, certainly worthy of visiting more than once. Truly a memory that will remain in our hearts forever. Isn’t that what travel is supposed to be? Whether traveling to your closest city or another country, capturing the small things we can share is unique and builds bonds. Memories like this are a gift; we are so thankful for having had them.
We, as a family, were able to share this unique evening, and for that, I will never forget IT. It was the part of this trip THAT WAS MOST MEMORABLE AND precious.
“For it is up to you and me to take solace in nostalgia’s arms and our ability to create the everlasting from fleeting moments.”
