A Day in the Garden

I spent a few long days in the garden pruning and weeding my flower beds last week. I tried to bring the last of my peonies indoors to design a pretty arrangement. Many of the blooms were spent, but I did manage to bring a few inside.

I had a business meeting in the afternoon to discuss new ideas and wanted to serve a cool beverage. It was hot during the day, and I thought a sweet pink lemonade would be perfect. I put a few chairs in the shade around one of my flower beds and served a delicious thirst-quenching beverage.

I wanted to bring the natural colors of summer to my table and encourage a welcoming and homey environment. A mix of natural summer floral shades is always magical and calms the soul. The soft colors of pink, blue, and green elicit warmth and comfort.

“There are few things as naturally beautiful as a handful of fresh flowers from the garden, simply arranged with a single leaf to lift one’s soul.”

My french market basket is always my favorite container for collecting flowers. It is sturdy and beautiful at the same time. You can’t get any better than that!

I always wear a hat when spending a day in the garden. I never realize how long I am outside until I look up and hours have passed! I want to protect myself from the sun as much as possible since it has been proven that the sun is very damaging to the skin. This hat has been my constant companion for many years. It might be time to get another…don’t you think?

Adding just a touch of flowers to decorate your food or beverage is a good idea. Always make sure anything you use is organic and edible.

Note: Many flower blossoms are NOT edible, and in fact, they are poisonous. These pictures are just examples of what you can do for your presentation. To learn which flowers are safe to eat, follow this link to Southern Living Magazine.

I wanted to make a unique beverage and thought of a Rose Lemonade. It sounded perfect for the hot summer day, and we needed a refreshing cold drink.

The Rose Lemonade had a lovely sweet flavor with a hint of floral scents and notes. Everyone just adored it.

Note: I followed the recipe by creating a simple rose sugar and adding it to the other ingredients when making the rose lemonade. The combination of lemon and rose petals brought depth and sweetness to the overall flavor, and I would recommend it highly. Here is the recipe for rose simple sugar.

As with everything I design, I created an inspiration mood board that always keeps me focused and on track. These are the colors I wanted to use as well; the theme was “gathering in the garden”.

Following a specific theme when designing for any event or interior will keep you on track and give you a continuous vision. This theme was “a day in the garden.”

I designed these little bouquets with the peonies in my garden. The French-style vase is perfect for creating a lovely casual atmosphere I adore.

flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the mind.
